OHCA Annual Convention 2022

Paul will be leading two sessions at Oregon Health Care Association’s annual convention. This year’s educational line up includes many cutting edge presentationS devoted to the intersectionality of diversity, equity and inclusion as it relates to the field of gerontology.
9:00-10:00 AM THE IMPORTANCE OF EVOLVING LANGUAGE AND ACRONYMS FOR LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY FOR OVERCOMING OPPRESSION
This session provides a framework for understanding LGBTQIA+-related terminology and evolving language that highlights greater diversity and inclusion while respecting generational differences. The presenter will explore the nuanced differences in and expanded definitions of preferred terminology and share terms which should be avoided and why. Participants will build skills in serving LTBTQIA+ elders by exploring the identified disparities, cultural context, and barriers to seeking and receiving care and support. Participants will build skills in serving LGBTQIA+ community in a sensitive, respectful, and ethical manner.
2:30-3:30 PM CREATING A WELCOMING LGBTQIA+ ENVIRONMENT
Told through case studies, this session will help participants recognize opportunities for creating more inclusive service delivery. By exploring real life examples of structural oppression, disparities, and environmental factors, the presenter will give audience members the resources to identify ways to improve and create a welcoming environment for LGBTQIA+ residents.
